HAEMANGIOMA: An innocent tumour composed of dilated blood vessels.
HAEMATOMA: Collection of blood in the tissues as in bruising.
HAEMOGLOBIN: Red pigment in the blood cells carrying oxygen to the tissues.
HAEMOSTATIC: Drug or other agent used to stop severe bleeding.
HALLUX: The big toe.
HAMSTRING: Muscles located at the back of the thigh that bend the knee and swing the leg backward from the hip.
HEMATEMESIS: Vomiting of blood.
HEMI-: Prefix denoting half.
HEMIPLEGIA: Paralysis that involves one side of the body in a lateral fashion.
HEPATITIS: Inflammation of the liver.
HEPTOMEGALY: Enlarged liver.
HEREDITARY: Refers to a disease or condition that is passed from parents to child.
HEREDITY: Genetic transmission of traits from parent to offspring.
HERPES: Inflammation of the skin or mucous membrane caused by a virus.
HETEROZYGOTE: The person only carries one copy of a defective RECESSIVE gene.
HEUM: The lowest part or end of the small intestine.
HIPPOCAMPUS: An area buried deep in the forebrain that helps regulate emotion and memory.
HOMOZYGOTE: The person carries two copies of a defective gene.
HORMONE: Chemical substance produced by an endocrine gland.
HYDROCEPHALUS: Abnormal increase of cerebrospinal fluid within the skull.
HYPER-: Prefix meaning excessive or increased.
HYPERAMMONAEMIA: State where ammonia is present in the blood.
HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA: An excess of bilirubin in the blood.
HYPEREXTENSIBILITY: Extend beyond normal limits.
HYPERPHAGIA: Over-eating.
HYPERPLASIA: Over-production of cells.
HYPERTELORISM: Widely spaced eyes.
HYPERTENSION: Increased blood pressure.
HYPERTHERMIA: Very high body temperature.
HYPERTONIA: Increased degree of tone or tension in muscles.
HYPERTROPHY: Over growth or thickening of part of an organ.
HYPO-: Prefix meaning inadequate or insufficient.
HYPOPLASIA: Defective or incomplete development of any tissue. Lingual hypoplasia: Incomplete development of the tongue. Mandibular hypoplasia; Micrognathia or unusually small lower jaw, usually accompanied by recession of the chin.
HYPOSPADIAS: A congenital deformity in which the urethra opens on the lower surface of the penis.
HYPOTONIA: 1. Low, or poor muscle tone (floppy muscles).
2. Damage to any part of the brain, usually including the cerebellum and basal ganglia, resulting in decreased stiffness of the extremities and trunk.
HYPSARRYTHMIA: A type of infantile convulsion.
