Some Terms You May Come Across:

OBESITY: Abnormal body weight, usually defined as more than 20 percent above average for age, height and bone structure.
OBSTETRICS: Branch of medicine concerned with pregnancy and childbirth.
OCCIPITAL: Pertaining to the back of the head.
OCCIPITAL LOBE: Area at the back of the brain that receives and processes visual information.
OCCIPITOPOSTERIOR POSITION: The baby's face is directed to the front of the birth canal and results in diameters of the baby's head that may be too large to pass through the birth passage unless the position of the head can be corrected.
OCCLUSION: The action of closing up or of being closed up.
OCCULTA: A concealed or hidden feature.
OCULAR: Relating to the eye.
OEDEMA: Swelling of the body caused by abnormal acculation of fluid in the tissues of the body.
OESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER: A circular band of muscle where the esophagus is attached to the stomach.
OESOPHAGUS: The canal down which solids and fluids pass from the mouth to reach the stomach.
OESTROGEN: Hormone which stimulates the function of the female reproductive organs.
OLFACTORY: Pertaining to sense of smell.
OMENTUM: A free fold of the peritoneum, or one serving to connect viscera, support blood vessels, etc..
OMPHOLOCELE: Umbilical hernia.
OPHTHALMOPLEGIA: Weakness or paralysis of muscles of the eye.
OPTIC NERVE: Nerve that carries visual impulses from the retina to the brain.
ORBIT: Eye socket.
OROFACIAL: Pertaining to the mouth and face.
OROPHARYNX: The area of the throat at the back of the mouth.
ORTHOPNEA: Difficulty breathing except in an upright position.
OSSEOUS: Pertaining to bones.
OSSICLE: A small bone, in this case in the middle ear.
OSTEO-: Relating to bone.
OSTEOCHONDRITIS: Inflammation of bone and cartilage.
-OSTOMY: Artificial opening.
OTITIS MEDIA: Excessive fluid, inflammation, and/or infection in the middle ear, caused by an inability to drain out through the eustachian tube. If not detected, it can cause hearing loss significant enough to affect the child's speech and language development.
OVARY: An ovary or "egg sac" is one of a pair of reproductive glands in women. The ovaries produce the ovum or female egg which is transferred through the fallopian tube for fertilization by the sperm. The ovary also produces both the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
OXYGEN: A gas present in air that is vital to life.
