Some Terms You May Come Across:

T CELL: A type of white blood cell (lymphocyte) that is part of the body's immune system.
TACHYCARDIA: Abnormally rapid heart rate (more than 100 beats per minute).
TACHYPNEA: Rapid breathing.
TACTILE: Sense of touch.
TALIPES: Any deformity of the foot, but usually refers to club feet.
TELANGIECTASIA: A condition of dilated capillary blood vessels, often multiple in character and forming simple tumours composed of blood.
TELECANTHUS: Wide-set eyelid openings, may be synonymous with hypertelorism.
TEMPERATURE: The temperature is the specific degree of hotness or coldness of the body. It is usually measured with a thermometer.
TEMPRAL LOBES: Areas located on each side of the brain that are important in processing memory information as well as hearing and some language function.
TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT: The joint between the lower jaw and the temporal bone of the skull.
TENDON: A tough, inelastic connective tissue that joins muscle to another structure, usually bone. When a tendon becomes inflamed, the condition is referred to as tendinitis or tendonitis.
TENTORIUM: Tent-like structure.
TESTES: The male reproductive organs that produce sperm and the male sex hormones; testicles.
TETRAPLEGIA: Paralysis of all four limbs.
THALAMUS: Part of the brain through which nearly all sensory input passes to the cerebral cortex.
THALASSEMIA: Inherited anemias (includes alpha thalassemia, beta thalassemia, etc.) found predominantly among people of Mediterranean descent.
THERAPEUTIC: Pertaining to treatment.
THORACIC: Relating to the chest cavity.
THORAX: The portion of the anatomy below the neck and above the diaphragm; the chest.
THYROID GLAND: Endocrine gland in the neck that produces thyroxine and calcitonin, hormones involved in the regulation of growth and metabolic rate.
TIBIA: The larger of the two bones in the lower leg; the shin bone.
TIBIALIS ANTERIOR MUSCLE: A shin muscle which pulls up the great toe.
TIC: An involuntary muscular contraction; a twitch or movement.
TISSUE: A collection of similar cells that form a body structure.
TONIC: The phase of a grand mal seizure that is marked by prolonged muscular contraction (rigidity).
TOPICAL: Pertaining to the surface of the body.
TORSION: Twisting.
TOXIN: A poisonous substance.
TRACHEA: The windpipe, which leads from the back of the throat to the lungs.
TRACHEOSTOMY: Surgery to create an opening (stoma) into the windpipe. The opening itself may also be called a tracheostomy.
TRACHEOSTOMY BUTTON: A 1/2- to 1-1/2-inch-long plastic tube placed in the stoma to keep it open.
TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE: A 2- to 3-inch metal or plastic tube that keeps the stoma and trachea open. Also called a trach ("trake") tube.
TRACHEOTOMY: Surgical opening into the windpipe to provide an artificial airway.
TRANSFUSION: Delivery of blood or a blood component into the bloodstream.
TRANSPLANTATION: The surgical transfer of an organ or tissue from one position (or person) to another.
TRANSVERSE: Crosswise.
TRANSVERSE COLON: The part of the large bowel between the ascending and descending colon, lying in the upper abdomen.
TRAUMA: Injury or damage.
TREMOR: Involuntary trembling.
TRICEPS: Muscle in the upper arm that extends the forearm.
TRICUSPID VALVE: Heart valve between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
TRIGEMINAL: Divided into three.
TRIGEMINAL NERVE: The nerve that delivers sensory stimuli to the brain from the face, teeth and tongue.
TRIMESTER: A term used to define a period of three months. In pregnancy, the first trimester is 1-12 weeks; the second trimester is 13-26 weeks, and the third or last trimester is 27- delivery.
TRIPLEGIA: Paralysis that involves three appendages, usually both legs and one arm.
TRUNCAL OBESITY: Fat deposited in the thorax and abdomen, instead of the hips and thighs.
TRUSS: A device used to hold a hernia or organ in position.
TUBULAR: Resembling a tube.
TUBULE: A small tube or canal, especially in the kidneys.
TYMPANIC MEMBRANE: The eardrum.
TYMPANOPLASTY: Repair or reconstruction of a damaged eardrum.
