X-LINKED: Everyone gets 1 chromozome from their mother and one from their father. The mother always gives an "X" chromozome, and the father gives either an "X" (which causes a female child) or a "Y" (which causes a male child). If a disorder is x-linked it is only found on the x chromozome. So in the case of a male child, if that child has an x-linked disorder, it was passed on by the mother. In the case of a female child, the defective gene could have come from either parent.
XX: The two chromosomes that determine sex - 1 chromozome from mother and one from father. The mother always gives an "X" chromozome, and if the father gives an "X" as well, you get a female child.
XY: The two chromosomes that determine sex - 1 chromozome from mother and one from father. The mother always gives an "X" chromozome, and if the father gives a "Y", you get a male child.
